The distinctive dseign of the stormtrooper was originally created by concept artist ralph mcquarrie in 1975. Mcquarrie designed several versions of the look of the empire's generla infantry. During pre-production of star wars episode iv a new hope, several versions of the stormtrooper helmet were prototyped for george lucas to review. The various elements that george liked from each version were incorporated into the final, menacing form we know today.
As the original helmet was hand sculpted, it was asymmetrical in geometry and had the infamous sty beneath the right eye. Approximately 60 helmets were simply made from vacuum formed polyethylene and painted white for star wars episode iv a new hope.
